Actavis Press Release - NAHPT Poster Competition

National Association of Hospital Pharmacy Technicians Poster Competition 2012

Following last year’s successful launch of the NAHPT Poster Competition in association with Actavis Ireland, Actavis Ireland under the Actavis Academy umbrella is delighted to announce the launch of the NAHPT Poster Competition for 2012.

The poster competition is an ideal way to share information between Hospital Pharmacy Technicians working in the field.

Speaking about the competition Caroline Fitzgerald, Hospital Business Manager, Actavis Ireland said that “Actavis are delighted again this year to sponsor the Poster Competition.

We are committed to supporting and working in partnership with Hospital Pharmacy Technicians across Ireland. We view the poster competition as an excellent way to raise awareness of the vital work that is being done by Technicians in Hospitals across the country. Actavis is committed to sponsoring this award for the foreseeable future.”

Last year the prize was won by Blathnaid McIntyre from AMNCH Tallaght Pharmacy Department. Blaithniad’s poster detailed her work in shadowing and observing the cleaning practices at the Aseptic Unit. Her recommendations and the updating of the SOP were approved and came into practice at the Unit last year.

There will be a prize of €500 for the winning entry

Closing date for applications is Monday 2nd April 2012

The winning poster will be announced at this year’s NAHPT Conference, which takes place on the 28th of April at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry.

NAHPT Annual Conference 2011 - A word from our President

A Word From Our President

N.A.H.P.T Annual Conference 26/03/2011

The National Association of Hospital Pharmacy Technicians held their 14th annual conference on Saturday 26th March 2011 in the Clarion Hotel Dublin Airport. It was a huge success with approximately one hundred delegates in attendance. The event was supported by pharmacy technicians from all sectors including students and representatives from the colleges that provide pharmacy technician studies. Elaine Conyard, President of the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ireland also attended the event.  We had excellent support from the pharmaceutical industry without whom, our association would not survive.

This was the first year we opened our poster competition to student pharmacy technicians, we had five poster entries and I am sure that will grow. We had a great response from hospital pharmacy technicians there were ten poster entries all to a very high standard. This was our first year for our poster competition to be sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. It was sponsored by Actavis with a brilliant prize of €500 which was won by Blathnaid McIntyre from A.M.N.C.H. Tallaght.

Our first speakers were a pharmacist and pharmacy technician team Tanya Appleby and Jennifer Mackey from A.M.N.C.H. Tallaght. Tanya gave us the background information on Clozapine and schizophrenia while Jennifer talked to us about her role as the technician who is responsible for the management and dispensing of Clozaril®. Their talk was very informative and it gave us a great insight into how the clinics and hospital work together and how the pharmacist and pharmacy technician work as a team.

Our keynote speaker was Parampreet Bahia. Pam is a senior pharmacy technician in St Thomas’s and Guy’s hospital in London. She specialises in medicine management, this includes taking patient histories, ensuring the drugs are available on the ward for the patient by ordering stock and non-stock drugs managing the supply of controlled drugs to ensure minimum amount on the ward.

Later in the morning we had a talk on motivation, this was given by Paddy Lavelle director of Careers Perspectives Ltd. She is an excellent speaker, had the audience totally engaged and all the delegates felt highly motivated and enthusiastic as a result.

Our fourth speaker was Catriona Gowing a pharmacist from the A.M.N.C.H. Tallaght. Catriona has always supported our conferences As usual she was brilliant. She spoke about continuous personal development (CPD). This talk gave us all food for thought.

After Lunch Julie Jordan, coordinator for pharmacy technician education and training, NI pharmacy training and development centre presented to us about CPD opportunities available to pharmacy technicians in Northern Ireland. She summarized the course for Accredited Checking Technicians and offered to give the course to pharmacy technicians in the south. Talks will be ongoing between NICPD and NAHPT.

Thank you to everyone who stayed for the AGM. It was a productive meeting with some ideas to follow up on. We have three new committee members, contact details for the committee will be on the website www.pharmtech.ie.

Fran Glynn.
